The Rundown – Week in Review

We’re one week from closing and moving to our new house and there’s just not a whole lot going on here except for packing, packing, and more packing.  Even so, we had a great week in our homeschool despite all of the distractions and even managed to sneak in some fun at the pond for a while.

Oh, did I mention that we’re packing?

Homeschool

There are weeks when we stray from our A-Z Curriculum, but there are also weeks where it is perfect for us.  This was a good week in our A-Z!  O was our Letter of the Week and our theme was oceans.  This was such a fun week!  It’s always a good week when Leo Lionni and Eric Carle make an appearance in our reading.

I must note that The Boy didn’t appreciate being around when we read Baby Whale’s Journey.  In fact, he was so traumatized by the first two pages that he ran screaming from the room.  Apparently the thought of flippers touching in a sea of stars was more than he can handle.

Prissy was also in on some of our anatomy lessons this week.  She was all about helping us make our visual for our lesson on blood.  We started with water and yellow food coloring to represent our plasma.  Then we added Cheerios dyed with red food coloring to represent red blood cells.  Marshmallows (white blood cells) and pecans (platelets) were added to complete our jar.

The Boy’s week was pretty busy.  By adding a little more to his workload than normal, my goal is to give us some lighter days as we move and unpack during the next couple of weeks.
While I certainly don’t consider these part of his workload, he went ahead and did both of his CurrClick Clubs for the month.  We’ve been fans of their Magic Tree House Club for a while now, but this was his first experience with the Lego Club.  I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again:  these are so, so good! There is so much thought put into these meetings. I’m still amazed by how much he learns and the fun he has while participating.

Lastly, on a bittersweet note, we did our final dictation in our favorite language arts curriculum.  Sniff sniff.  The Boy is equally sad about this.  After last year’s very traditional,”schoolish,” and unsuccessful approach to language arts,  Sheldon’s New Primary Language Lessons has been such a blessing in our homeschool.  This approach to language arts was exactly what we needed and has confirmed what I’ve known for a while: our homeschool isn’t very “schoolish,” and it’s more  Charlotte Mason-based than ever before.

That’s The Rundown for this week and possibly for the next couple of weeks.  We’ve got a whole lot of busyness coming our way as we close and move to our new home.
Enjoy your time around the table and make those moments count!
