I knew that technology education was missing from my son’s high school plans up to this point and honestly didn’t know when or how we would tackle that component in our homeschool.

Here in 2021, computer and tech skills also double as life skills in a lot of ways. As old millennials, my husband and I have been incredibly grateful for our tech-related skillset in every line of work we’ve experienced thus far.

Here’s the thing about that: neither of us ever specifically learned tech skills with the intention of using them in tech-related fields, but we use them regularly and always have. Whatever the career field, tech skills made all the difference.

If that’s true for our generation, the importance of technology education will be even greater for our children. In other words, technology isn’t going anywhere. That means it’s practical to equip our children with the skills needed for work, creativity, and even play.

2. Technology fosters creativity.

In a game of word association, you likely connect creativity with the arts without much thought. The arts and creativity certainly go hand in hand, but creativity is also a huge component in coding, programming, and other tech applications.

This connection is particularly important to my son. Though he plans to attend college and major in creative writing, his time with MYTEK Lab has shown him that tech can be another vehicle for his storytelling.

He still writes daily, but these tech lessons have helped him branch out and find new creative applications.

I’m an advocate for teaching and modeling positive tech usage for our kids, so I’m always excited when I learn of new ways to make it happen.

Instead of mindlessly scrolling social media — none of us adults do that, right? — or only playing games, technology education promotes intentional screen time.

Better yet, it lays the foundation for skills that students can continue to build on over the years and put to use in college, work, and creative ventures.
