Need to add technology education to your homeschool plans, but don’t know where to start? I have a great solution for you!

*I received complimentary access to this course and was compensated for my time. I was not required to write a positive review; as always, all opinions are my own. See my full disclosure to learn more.*
I knew that technology education was missing from my son’s high school plans up to this point and honestly didn’t know when or how we would tackle that component in our homeschool.
You see, my husband and I are both well-versed in some aspects of tech, but there are plenty of aspects we’ve never needed to know. That’s why I was so grateful to learn about MYTEK LAB’s online technology classes. They’ve truly been a gamechanger for my teen and I’m excited to tell you about them.
Why Technology Education Deserves a Place in Your Homeschool
We’re a couple of months into our MYTEK Lab classes and I’m excited to share what we’ve learned. But before we jump into the details, let’s talk about why technology education is important for every student.
1. It’s practical.
Here in 2021, computer and tech skills also double as life skills in a lot of ways. As old millennials, my husband and I have been incredibly grateful for our tech-related skillset in every line of work we’ve experienced thus far.
Here’s the thing about that: neither of us ever specifically learned tech skills with the intention of using them in tech-related fields, but we use them regularly and always have. Whatever the career field, tech skills made all the difference.

If that’s true for our generation, the importance of technology education will be even greater for our children. In other words, technology isn’t going anywhere. That means it’s practical to equip our children with the skills needed for work, creativity, and even play.
2. Technology fosters creativity.
In a game of word association, you likely connect creativity with the arts without much thought. The arts and creativity certainly go hand in hand, but creativity is also a huge component in coding, programming, and other tech applications.
This connection is particularly important to my son. Though he plans to attend college and major in creative writing, his time with MYTEK Lab has shown him that tech can be another vehicle for his storytelling.
He still writes daily, but these tech lessons have helped him branch out and find new creative applications.

Want to further explore the connection between creativity and technology? Fareed Zakaria's In Defense of a Liberal Education is a good read on this topic.
3. Technology education teaches responsible tech usage.
I’m an advocate for teaching and modeling positive tech usage for our kids, so I’m always excited when I learn of new ways to make it happen.
Instead of mindlessly scrolling social media — none of us adults do that, right? — or only playing games, technology education promotes intentional screen time.
Better yet, it lays the foundation for skills that students can continue to build on over the years and put to use in college, work, and creative ventures.
What You Need to Know About MYTEK LAB’s Online Classes
Now that you know why technology education is an important part of a well-rounded education, here’s how MYTEK LAB can help.
Through MYTEK LAB’s Level 1 classes, students receive an introduction to several areas of technology education. In particular, these lessons cover technology concepts, programming fundamentals, web design tools, and creative applications.
In Level 2, students use the skills learned in Level 1, but dig deeper into coding and more complex applications.

And if all of that sounds overwhelming? No worries, they have TONS of videos and help available to help your student get started. 🙂
Here are some other things to know about MYTEK LAB:
- The classes are ideal for middle and high schoolers.
- Full year classes can be used to earn computer education credits.
- Students can attend classes live or watch the recorded classes and complete the exercises at that time.
- Parents get a weekly reminder email a few minutes before classes begin. (This is super helpful for busy days!)
- Classes are available for experienced students and for students with little or no experience.

What My Teen LOVES about MYTEK Lab
I mentioned earlier that MYTEK LAB has been a gamechanger for my teen. He had no tech education before these classes and now experiments and creates in his free time. He LOVES learning and honing these tech skills and is constantly showing us new things he’s learned through the classes.
In his words, he recommends MYTEK Lab because, “I like being able to share what I’m making and interact with other users. The community and feedback are nice, but it’s also fun to help others with their projects and enjoy what they’ve created.”
Speaking of that community, he regularly says, “These are my people” after spending time in class or interacting with other students.
He also shared these thoughts with me: “It’s helped me tap into a new aspect of creativity and given me the tools I need to go wherever my imagination takes me.”

Lastly, he echoes my thoughts that any student can benefit from these classes:
“It’s for anyone interested in tech, from beginners to some tech experience to pretty experienced, there’s always more to learn and create and MYTEK Lab will help.”
