I love finding new ways to make Bible stories come alive for my kids. Sometimes that’s easy and sometimes it’s not, but the easy times are usually because I’ve found a Bible resource that clicks for my kids. Most recently, I’ve found Zondervan’s Once Upon a Time Storybook Bible and Once Upon a Time Holy Bible to help God’s Word come alive for my daughter.
Once Upon a Time Storybook Bible
The Once Upon a Time Storybook Bible begins with these words:
“Inside these pages are some of the greatest stories ever told… and believe it or not, they’re real. All of these stories come from the Bible.
In this book, you will meet vicious giants, hungry lions, and fish that can swallow people whole. You’ll see awesome angels and amazing miracles. You’ll read about heroes, villains, and the ultimate fight between good and evil.”
The Once Upon a Time Storybook Bible is a charming storybook Bible to share with young children. Beautifully illustrated by Omar Aranda, it contains 33 well-known Bible stories that begin with “once upon a time” and end with “happily ever after.”
Each “once upon a time” reference accompanies a scripture highlighting the takeaway point of each story. Likewise, the “happily ever after” closings include scripture and reinforce the takeaway for each story. This makes it easy to help children who are drawn to fairy tales connect the dots between the story and life application.

The Once Upon a Time Holy Bible is a New International Reader’s Version hardcover Bible (yay for durability!) highlighting six beloved Bible stories. This happens through four-page inserts with the same captivating illustrations from the Once Upon a Time Storybook Bible.
Beyond those inserts, the Once Upon a Time Holy Bible contains a presentation page for easy gift-giving, a dictionary, and a scripture listing to help children find their favorite Bible stories.
Our Experience with Once Upon a Time Storybook Bible and Holy Bible
The Once Upon a Time Storybook Bible and Holy Bible have been a wonderful addition to our daily reading time. Each day, we’ve chosen a Bible story featured in the storybook Bible, read the corresponding scriptures from the Once Upon a Time Holy Bible, and finished our Bible time with the illustrated storybook version.
My five year-old fairy tale-loving daughter loves our Once Upon a Time Storybook Bible and I love how easy it is to get her attention with this once upon a time theme.
I also love how the Once Upon a Time line presents me with an opportunity to point out the differences between fairy tales and the stories from the Bible. Zondervan’s Once Upon a Time line emphasizes how these stories truly happened once upon a time and how God has a happily ever after for these Bible heroes and all of us as well.
