Some of these Georgia O’Keeffe books are nonfiction and full of details, but some are picture books that provide an introduction to O’Keeffe’s life and art. There’s also a good mix of books for preschoolers, middle elementary, and even older kids.
Also worth noting, some of these are familiar favorites of ours and some are books we’re hoping to read soon. Regardless, they’re all on our radar and I’m happy to share them with you today. Let’s take a look:
Georgia O’Keeffe Books for Kids
Before we jump into the list, keep in mind that all of the links in the descriptions below lead to Amazon. If you prefer to support independent bookstores through your purchases, see this Bookshop.org list. It has most of these titles and some extras that I haven’t included here.
1. Georgia’s Bones
Georgia’s Bones by Jen Bryant is a good place to start when introducing younger children to Georgia O’Keeffe. It features lovely illustrations and emphasizes Georgia’s ability to find beauty in ordinary objects that many of us overlook from day to day.
2. Wideness and Wonder
At 124 pages, Wideness and Wonder is a good option for older kids learning about Georgia O’Keeffe. It shares Georgia’s story in detail but does so in digestible chunks. It also includes images of her paintings and photographs from significant events and places in her life.
3. Through Georgia’s Eyes
Another great picture book option about Georgia O’Keeffe, Through Georgia’s Eyes presents Georgia’s life through engaging, but to-the-point storytelling and colorful cut-paper illustrations. An added bonus, it includes a biographical overview at the end.
4. Georgia O’Keeffe
Georgia O’Keeffe from Mike Venezia’s Getting to Know the World’s Greatest Artists series is a great nonfiction option for learning about Georgia O’Keeffe. Like the others in the series, it includes details about Georgia’s background and career, fun illustrations, and full-color reproductions of her work.
5. Georgia Rises
Georgia Rises is one of our favorite O’Keeffe books for kids! This one is an interesting and beautiful glimpse into what a day in Georgia’s life might have been like while she lived in New Mexico.
6. My Name Is Georgia
Jeanette Winter’s My Name Is Georgia is another picture book option for Georgia O’Keeffe. It’s written from Georgia’s point of view, includes colorful illustrations, and uses minimal text, which makes it a good fit for little ones who aren’t fond of lengthy read aloud selections.
7. Georgia in Hawaii
I love finding books like Georgia in Hawaii: When Georgia O’Keeffe Painted What She Pleased! This book shares the little-known story of Georgia’s experience working with The Hawaiian Pineapple Company. In addition to the cool story featured here, it includes notes, maps of the Hawaiian islands, and details about Georgia’s favorite flowers.
8. Georgia O’Keeffe: The Artist in the Desert
Georgia O’Keeffe: The Artist in the Desert is unique in the sense that its author, Britta Benke, has studied, taught, and written extensively on Georgia O’Keeffe. In this kid-friendly title, you’ll meet Georgia, gain understanding of her unique lifestyle, and enjoy photographs of O’Keeffe and her paintings.
9. Meet Georgia O’Keeffe
It’s one thing to read about an artist, but it’s a special thing to be able to think like the artist you’re studying. That’s were Meet Georgia O’Keeffe comes in. This fun book looks closely at Georgia’s paintings and the inspirations behind them but then invites kids to use those inspirations to get creative. This one is a great way to add another dimension to your O’Keeffe study!
10. Georgia O’Keeffe
Georgia O’Keeffe from the Little People, Big Dreams series is a fantastic book for younger kiddos learning about O’Keeffe. It’s available in board book format, has adorable illustrations, and features a timeline and biographical overview in the back.
11. The Spirit Catchers
The Spirit Catchers: An Encounter with Georgia O’Keeffe is another unique one on this list because it’s a historical fiction selection about Georgia. It’s based on Georgia’s Ram’s Skull with Brown Leaves and is aimed at readers 12 and up.
12. Georgia O’Keeffe
Georgia O’Keeffe from the Artists in Their Time series is a great choice if you need an extensive nonfiction option about Georgia. We borrowed this one from our local library and found it to be one of our favorite Georgia O’Keeffe books.
It’s biographical in nature, but does a great job in drawing parallels between the things happening in Georgia’s life and how they influenced her art. It includes tons of pictures and paintings, as well as a timeline, glossary, and a listing of museums that feature her work in their galleries.
