I never dreamed I would be looking for new math resources three months into a school year, but that’s what happened last year when my daughter devoured her kindergarten math course before December arrived. I now know to be better prepared since I scrambled to supplement her math education to get us through the kindergarten year.
*I received one subscription box from Discovering Learning for review and have been compensated for my time writing this. I was not required to write a positive review and all opinions are my own.*
I spent time hunting and gathering free printables and math workbooks from our local dollar stores after my daughter blew through that math curriculum last year.
These $1 workbooks and printables were a great way to help me buy some time while shopping for more curriculum, but I noticed pretty quickly that you can’t hodgepodge your way through math education. If you do, you end up with lots of confusion and no cohesive scope and sequence. Ask me how I know.
Math Education Subscription from Discovering Learning
That bad hodgepodge experience is exactly why I was so excited to learn about the Discovering Learning Math Subscription Program. Subscription boxes are cool enough on their own, but a math box? Needless to say, my little one and I were excited to get our Discovery Learning box in the mail!
Discovering Learning Math
Subscription Program Overview
As excited as we were to receive our Level 1 Discovery Learning box, we were even more excited when we saw what was inside. We opened it and found an eye-catching and colorful 44-page workbook, matching scorebook, test, letters to the student and parent, and a fun pen.
We opted for the Level 1 box since my daughter is five years-old, but there are five levels to choose from for the subscriptions:
- Level 1 – Ages 4-6
- Level 2 – Ages 7-8
- Level 3 – Ages 8-9
- Level 4 – Ages 9-10
- Level 5 – Ages 10-12
Also worth noting, subscription lengths are available for one month, five months, or ten months with discounted rates for the longer subscription packages.
Our Experience with Discovering Learning
Now that you know more about the Discovering Learning Math Subscription, here are my observations.
Design doesn’t matter in a perfect world, but in reality good design goes a long way in making math fun for kids. Even as an adult, I instantly noticed the colorful and game-like pages in the Discovering Learning materials.
If all that color caught my attention so quickly, you can imagine how much my little one loves it. I could be wrong, but that game-like design probably has a lot to do with the reason I practically had to tear the workbook away from her when she started working through it the first time.
No kidding, she did a third of it in the first sitting with a smile on her face the whole time. Indeed, a kid-friendly design matters to our young learners.
Steady Concept Review
In addition to the great design, I noticed the workbook’s steady concept review. Since we’re using this as a supplement to our math curriculum, I appreciate that there’s never an overwhelming amount of math work on each page. Instead, they contain just enough practice to keep recently-learned skills fresh in my daughter’s mind.
I also appreciate Discovering Learning’s solid scope and sequence. This was definitely missing when I tried to piece together my own supplemental plan with those dollar store workbooks and printables I found online.
Open & Go Convenience
A math subscription program is a perfect fit for us since my math lover likes to blow through my math plans. If she finishes more quickly than I expect, no worries. I can rest easy knowing there’s another box on the way.
