Did you know Bach considered himself “a theologian with a keyboard” or that George Washington Carver taught a campus Bible study and often dressed as Bible characters during his studies?

What about trailblazers like Aimee Semple McPherson, a woman preaching the Gospel at a time when women simply didn’t preach, or Mary McLeod Bethune, a brilliant educator who made it possible for the underprivileged and underserved to thrive academically?

Living books are the heart of our homeschool days. We love meeting new people, making new connections, visiting different times and places, and exploring new perspectives through the books on our shelves.

That’s why I’m always grateful to discover new resources. What’s even better is when these new resources highlight Christian role models and the way they’ve impacted the world. That’s why I’m excited to share a lovely new book we’re reading, Eternity through the Rearview Mirror: How Simple Faith Changes Everything — 17 Extraordinary Lives.

Whether you’re looking at familiar historical figures or discovering a group of world changers for the first time, there’s much to learn from the heroes of the faith who have gone before us.

Eternity through the Rearview Mirror

At first glance, Eternity through the Rearview Mirror seems like a collection of short biographical overviews of some key historical figures who impacted the world in a variety of ways. That’s certainly true, but this book is so much more.

In it, author Annette Hubbell shares the conversational first-person accounts of seventeen Christians from different backgrounds and different eras. Some of these Christ followers are notable historical figures, yet some are lesser-known, but equally impactful.

Eternity through the Rearview Mirror highlights all of the extraordinary heroes I mentioned eariler, but also shares the stories of Galileo Galilei, John Newton, Elizabeth Fry, Abraham Lincoln, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Amy Carmichael, Corrie ten Boom, C. S. Lewis, Gladys Aylward, Louie Zamperini, and Johnny Cash.

See this overview for a brief introduction to each of the 17 heroes included in this book.

Why It’s Important to Include Christian Role Models in History Lessons

In our time reading Eternity through the Rearview Mirror, my big kid and I have discussed the mix of role models, their faith, and how it influenced their legacies.

We’ve found it interesting that several of the people discussed are indisputably known as world changers, but their relationships with God aren’t always mentioned in other accounts of their stories. Unfortunately we can’t see the big picture when we leave God out of it. That’s true throughout history and in our own lives.

Eternity through the Rearview Mirror does a beautiful job in bridging that gap and connecting these heroes with the faith that shaped, guided, and helped them accomplish the very things we celebrate them for today.

What’s more is the book ends by reminding readers of their roles in God’s story. We’re reminded that we are called to be world changers too and that all jobs — big, seemingly small, or somewhere in between — carry serious weight in the Kingdom.

Whether you positively change the world for one person, for a nation, or for the world, the outcome will be a noble and glorious reality.

– Annette Hubbell

Bottom Line: Eternity through the Rearview Mirror is a wonderful living book to add to your homeschool shelf. There are lots of books that highlight Christians in history, but I’ve never seen one with such conversational storytelling and a diverse collection of stories. It’s engaging, enlightening, and a needed reminder that we’re here for such a time as this.
