I’ve shared before how we don’t include Bible study in our homeschool schedules. Unfortunately most people see those words and come up with a whole slew of negative assumptions about how we approach — or don’t approach — Bible study in our family.

The thing is, we do start our homeschool days with a short devotion. We even read Bible passages a few times a week, but we only read and narrate at those times. Any digging deeper happens during personal or family Bible study and church.

While we take a non-academic approach to Bible study in our home, that doesn’t mean we don’t want our kids to dive in and learn more when they’re personally ready. That’s why I’m grateful to discover new resources that help them do so in an age-appropriate, yet challenging way.

What’s even better is when these new resources help them understand God’s Word and grow their faith. That’s why I want you to know about an insightful new book my teen is reading called The Jesus of the Gospels.

A Jesus-Focused Bible Commentary for Teens

Studying the Bible is a wonderful thing; it’s an irreplaceable part of a life of faith. That said, while we want our sons and daughters to know the Bible and what’s inside, all of that study will only take them so far if they don’t really know Jesus.

That’s where The Jesus of the Gospels comes into the picture.

Whether you’re looking for Bible study tools to use with your teenager or tools for your teen to use independently, this Bible commentary can help connect your teen to the good news and see Jesus through fresh eyes. Here’s why:

The Jesus of the Gospels

At first glance, The Jesus of the Gospels seems similar to the other Bible commentaries we’ve got sitting on our bookshelves. It’s true that it’s similar in premise to the books my husband accumulated while obtaining his Biblical Studies degree, but there’s one important thing that sets it apart from other commentaries:

It wasn’t written for scholars. Instead, author Andreas J. Kostenberger wrote The Jesus of the Gospels to be the book he wanted for his own college-aged children.

I wanted them to have a reliable guide by their side as they read the Gospels, informed by sound scholarship but accessible and jargon-free. Surveying the market, I found that most books on Jesus were either written for other scholars or penned in a popular, if not sensational, vein.

He aimed to write an accessible guide about Jesus and the Gospels and that’s exactly what he did. In fact, here’s what my own teen said about that very aspect of The Jesus of the Gospels:

I like that it’s an in-depth look at the books (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John). That usually seems off-limits for anyone who isn’t a Bible scholar, but this book makes the conversation possible.

I also like that I can use the footnotes and other suggested resources to learn more on specific topics.

Beyond accessibility, The Jesus of the Gospels provides an introduction to the Gospels and details on the research involved in writing the commentary.

After the introduction, the book covers each Gospel individually and works through them chapter by chapter while providing highlights, explanations, and diagrams.

Also worth noting, a 30-day reading plan and suggested resources for further learning are included in the back of the book.

I’m sure all of that sounds pretty academic and not at all like something I’d typically share with my kids, but here’s the thing: I want my kids to dig deeper when it comes to Jesus.

Because of that, I’m happy to equip them with resources that bring them a greater understanding of His time here on Earth and help them focus on what being a Christ-follower really means. That’s what happens through The Jesus of the Gospels.

Why Use a Bible Commentary for Teens?

Now that you know more about The Jesus of the Gospels, let’s talk about why your teen may benefit from using a Bible commentary like this.

The Problem with Sermons

I love a good sermon. I highlight, take notes, and have even live-Tweeted plenty of sermons over the years. As goofy as it sounds, I honestly love hearing preachers and teachers alike share the messages God has given them and being encouraged and challenged by them.

But as much as I like listening to sermons and appreciate their value, I know they’re not enough to help with overall understanding. Sure, they’re helpful when it comes to application and growing along with your church family, but they often fall short in piecing the passages covered into the big picture of the historical timeline.

Along those lines, I also recognize how segmented sermons can be. Think about it: Covering Hebrews one month, then Hosea the next, and Romans the month after that can bring about Biblical whiplash.

Learning and Growing in Faith

I’ve read the Bible in its entirety at least six times since my youngest kiddo was born. I tell you this not to emphasize how much I’ve read, but instead how little it matters when it comes to making connections in the Bible.

So, while my Bible reading is important to me, I can honestly say that I’ve always understood more — and therefore applied more — when I read passages with a commentary-like companion.

Don’t get me wrong. The Word itself is inspired, but insight into the culture, history, and timing surrounding each book contained within it provides a new level of understanding for each story, each struggle, and each victory.

Helping Teens Connect the Dots with Bible Commentaries

Why all this talk about culture and timelines within the Bible? Well, as a church-going, Bible-reading parent, I now understand how much I didn’t know before.

I’ve experienced the gaps that come from relying on a passage here and there and surface-level Bible reading. Now I want to prevent my kids from experiencing the same gaps I’m working to fill in.

Can you relate?

Looking for Bible study resources to help your teen or young adult learn more about the life of Jesus? This Bible commentary will help them see Jesus like never before.

That’s why a good Bible commentary like The Jesus of the Gospels makes such a difference. A commentary takes the scriptures themselves and works through them while providing valuable insight on the culture, history, and geography that’s particularly relevant to the scriptures that are covered.

Bible commentaries aren’t tools for scholars, ministers, or seminary students. They’re for all believers — young and not-so young — who want to dig deeper in understanding God’s story.
