Oddly enough, Rembrandt van Rijn isn’t an artist we’ve covered in our homeschool art studies yet. We did, however, come across his story in a recent lesson from The Mystery of History Volume III. This lesson covered Rembrandt from a historical perspective, but also introduced us to his artistic style and what set him apart from other artists of his day.

This lesson, as fantastic as it was, just left us wanting to know more about Rembrandt. Not surprisingly, that led us to our library. So, without further ado, here are eight of the best children’s books we found on Rembrandt.

Children’s Books About Rembrandt

1. Introducing Rembrandt

Introducing Rembrandt is a great book choice for, well, introducing Rembrandt to your kids. It includes, reproductions of his work, relevant biographical and historical information, and even a timeline of Rembrandt’s life.

2. What Makes a Rembrandt a Rembrandt?

The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s What Makes a Rembrandt a Rembrandt? is a great in-depth look at 12 of Rembrandt’s most well-known pieces. It includes the stories behind each piece, historical and cultural information to help understand the meanings, and notes regarding artistic style and techniques used.

3. Rembrandt: Getting to Know the World’s Greatest Artists

Like the other titles in Mike Venezia’s Getting to Know the World’s Famous Artists series, Rembrandt is a great combination of biographical information and reproductions of Rembrandt’s paintings.

The best part is that all of this comes in a fun package due to Venezia’s trademark writing and illustrations. If you only grab one book on Rembrandt, this is probably the one to get.

4. Rembrandt and the Boy Who Drew Dogs:
A story about Rembrandt van Rijn

I didn’t find much in the way of picture books on Rembrandt. In fact, Rembrandt and the Boy Who Drew Dogs: A story about Rembrandt van Rijn was one of the only ones I came across.

Much like Laurence Anholt does in the Anholt’s Artist Books for Children series, author Molly Blaisdell uses creative license to share the story of Rembrandt and his son Titus through the pages of a wonderfully illustrated story. This is an especially great choice for introducing Rembrandt to younger kids.

5. A Weekend with Rembrandt

Ever wonder what it might be like to visit Rembrandt van Rijn? A Weekend with Rembrandt gives a pretty good idea. In this title, author Pascal Bonafoux writes from the perspective of Rembrandt as if he were hosting the reader in his home for the weekend.

Also worth noting, it includes reproductions of some of Rembrandt’s work and locations for displays of his work at the time of the book’s publication.

6. Rembrandt and Titus: Artist and Son

One of the only picture books I found on Rembrandt, Rembrandt and Titus: Artist and Son tells about Rembrandt’s life through the eyes of his son Titus. Although the text is historical fiction, it does include a small biography and Rembrandt-inspired illustrations.

7. Rembrandt and Seventeenth-Century Holland

I love how Rembrandt and Seventeenth-Century Holland shows life in 17th-century Holland as Rembrandt experienced it. This is a great choice for older readers, particularly because it gives great insight to the cultural, political, and religious climate of that time and place.

8. Rembrandt (Lives of the Artists)

Rembrandt (Lives of the Artists) was another title I discovered through my local library. I especially loved this one because it thoroughly covered Rembrandt’s personal life, his career, and artistic legacy. I also found the glossary in the back to be helpful for understanding specific art, historical, and even religious terminology used it the book.
