10 Children’s Books About the Moon

1. Kitten’s First Full Moon

Kitten’s First Full Moon from Kevin Henkes is an adorable picture book about a kitten who mistakes her first full moon for a bowl of milk. It’s a great choice if you’re looking for books about the moon that introduce that specific phase without diving into the science behind it.

Why read a book that doesn’t dive into the science? Books like Kitten’s First Full Moon are useful — especially for young learners — because they can be a great starting point when introducing new topics. A fun story like this can spur questions and open the door for further discovery.

2. Long Night Moon

I read Cynthia Rylant’s Long Night Moon with my little one a few days ago and loved it. We loved learning about the names given to the moon by Native Americans, but we also loved the gorgeous illustrations. Be warned, though. If you have a little one who loves pink, it may be hard to get past the Strawberry Moon. Ask me how I know.

3. The Moon Book

What I love the most about The Moon Book from Gail Gibbons is how it presents information about the moon, but not in an overwhelming way. It combines to-the-point text with cartoon-like illustrations and gives a great overview of the moon for younger learners.

4. I Took the Moon for a Walk

I Took the Moon for a Walk is a sweet picture book about the moon, but that’s not all there is to it. It also includes information about moon phases, cultural significance, and how the moon has been used over time to help with calendars and even farming.

5. The Moon Seems to Change

The Moon Seems to Change is recommended for preschool through middle elementary grades, but it’s a great choice to add to your homeschool shelves. I love the illustrations in this one, but I also love that it includes instructions for a simple experiment to help kids grasp why the moon seems to change.

6. Faces of the Moon

Finally, a moon book with die cuts! Bob Crelin’s Faces of the Moon is playful, informative, and a great way to learn about moon phases with your kids.

7. So That’s How the Moon Changes Shape

Another good nonfiction book about the moon, Allan Fowler’s So That’s How the Moon Changes Shape is a good read for early and middle elementary learners who are exploring the moon. It contains basic facts, simple explanations, photos, and a few diagrams.

8. Papa, Please Get the Moon for Me

One of our favorite Eric Carle books, Papa, Please Get the Moon for Me tells the story of a girl who wants the moon and the father who gets it for her. This book makes us smile, but it also presents great opportunity to talk about moon phases.

9. Moon

With few words and big images, Moon from Melanie Mitchell is perfect for shorter attention spans. There’s not much text in this one, but the images do enough talking on their own.

10. The Moon

The Moon from Seymour Simon is a great choice for older elementary kids because there’s a bit more reading involved than most of the books on this list. My favorite thing about this book are the images. They leave readers in awe because they’re about as up close and personal to the moon as you can get.
