Bring Artist Study to Life with Mixed Media

Both of my kids love art appreciation and artist study.  In some ways, that makes it easy on me as a homeschool mom.  In some ways, however, that’s tough.  It leaves me constantly looking for ways to keep our art study fresh and engaging.

I’ve referred to myself for years as a not-so artsy homeschool parent and, although I’m making progress, it’s challenging for me to find new ways teach art appreciation.

It’s also challenging for me to properly spotlight the gifted artists who have shaped what we know as art.  Even more challenging for me is to teach my kids how to create.  Techniques, styles, and how-tos simply aren’t my strong point.

That’s why Alisha Gratehouse’s mixed media workshops have been such a game-changer for us.  We had an incredible experience with The Art of Fall and Winter Wonderland e-Courses.  You can imagine how excited we were to learn about her Mixing with the Masters e-Course!

Artist Study Comes Alive
with Mixed Media

This Mixing with the Masters e-Course will be spread over six weeks through detailed videos and supply lists of each project. Although each art project will be clearly inspired by the original artist, they will also reflect the imagination and creativity of the individual student.  Better yet, each class in the e-Course can be watched and enjoyed according to your family’s schedule.

This workshop is intended for kids ages 8 and up, meaning teens and adults can enjoy it too! (Don’t mention that part to my four year-old!  I’m sure I’ll end up helping her tackle some of these projects!)  The goal is to ignite a love for the masters, to encourage students to enjoy the art process, and to inspire them to explore and grow their God-given creativity.

Artist Study Meets Mixed Media Art

Mixing with the Masters, Volume 1, features six world famous artists from various eras and movements. The course explores their lives, art styles, techniques, mediums, and genres.

The best part is the opportunity to recreate some of their most famous masterpieces and take them to another level through mixed media.  Here’s a look at the masters we’ll meet:

  • Leonardo da Vinci – High Renaissance
  • Rembrandt van Rijn – Baroque
  • Claude Monet – Impressionism

  • Vincent van Gogh – Post-Impressionism
  • Pablo Picasso – Cubism
  • Georgia O’Keeffe – American Modernism

I also appreciate how studies for each artist in Volume 1 will be available for purchase individually once their release dates arrive.  That’s a perfect way to incorporate art into other areas you’re studying in your homeschool plans.

For example, we’re exploring The Renaissance through The Mystery of History this year.  If you’re covering that period in your history plans also, the da Vinci study would make a wonderful, hands-on addition to your lineup.

Mixing with the Masters: Hands-on Artist Study

Beyond the master artists themselves, this workshop will explore and experiment with several art forms and techniques:

  • Sketching and charcoal drawing
  • Watercolor painting
  • Pastel painting
  • Acrylic painting techniques like
    • Fresco
    • Chiaroscuro
    • Impasto
    • Alla Prima
    • Gradient
  • Wax resist
  • Collage art
  • And more!

While my kids are familiar with art techniques like watercolor painting, pastel painting, and sketching, they’ll have the chance to build on what they already know and explore completely new areas.  Yet another reason this isn’t the typical artist study!
