While I wholeheartedly believe that the Bible is the ultimate resource for parenting, I’m happy to accept help from Christian authors who have a heart for helping parents as well.  Here’s a look at my favorite books for Christian parents.

10 Favorite Books for Christian Parents

1. The Power of a Praying Parent – This is one of those books that can be read over and over again and be helpful in new ways every time.  I’m sure I’m not alone in wanting to be a praying parent, but it’s not always as easy as it sounds.  This book is a great resource for Christian parents because it helps with the specifics of praying for our children.  There’s nothing wrong with “Bless him, Lord” or “Lord, wrap your arms around her,” but I want my prayers to be prayers of substance and I’ve found the guidance in these pages invaluable every time I’ve read it.

2. How Many Times Do I Have to Tell You – I love this book by Rachael Carman and know you will also!  The premise of this one is that lots of the things we end up saying to our kids strongly parallel our relationship with and actions towards God.  I especially love that the chapters are bite-sized; that makes it easy to squeeze in some encouragement even on the busiest days.

3.  Parenting: From Surviving to Thriving – Out of all of the books on this list, Charles Swindoll’s Parenting is the one we’ve had the longest and is another one we’ve picked up time and time again.  It explores God’s plan and purpose for families and focuses on strengthening families.

4.  Strong and Kind: And Other Important Character Traits Your Child Needs to Succeed – There’s no way I could have a list of great books for Christian parents and not mention Strong and Kind.  I’ve been shouting from the rooftops ever since I read it that it’s probably the best parenting book I’ve ever read and I still mean it.  Be sure to check out my Strong and Kind review to learn more about it.

5.  The Family Blessing – The cover of this one says it all: Make a profound difference in the lives of your children through the simple daily act of blessing.  I received this gem as a freebie at a conference a few years ago and absolutely loved it.  If you’re all for leaving a God-filled legacy for future generations, you’ll love this one too!

6.  For Parents Only: Getting Inside the Head of Your Kid – Full disclosure here: I haven’t actually read this one yet.  My hubby, however, loves For Parents Only enough to keep multiple copies in his office to give out to parents in our church.  He says this is a great go-to resource for parents of preteens and teenagers.

7.  Trophy Child – This was the first book I read from pastor Ted Cunningham and I was blown away by it!  Trophy Child is about raising our kids to be children of God and not superstars in the eyes of the world.  If you could see my highlighted pages and all of the notes I made, you’d know why I happily recommend this one to other parents.

8.  Spiritual Parenting: An Awakening for Today’s Families – I shared my thoughts about this book back in my June Reading List, but in a nutshell, Spiritual Parenting takes the very principles being shared in pulpits all over and shows what they look like in the modern Christian home.

9.  The SuperMom Myth – This one is the perfect read for the mom who’s tired of trying to do it all.  In The SuperMom Myth, Becky Kopitzke reminds us that the only way to conquer the villains of motherhood — or the traps we often fall into — is to rely on God and the strength and power that comes only from Him.  (Be sure to check out my review to learn more: Letting Go of Perfect: The SuperMom Myth Review)

10.  Searching for Sanity: 52 Insights from Parents of the Bible –  This year-long devotional is a great choice for parents looking to find wisdom from the parents of the Bible.  As I mentioned in my review of Searching for Sanity, one thing I really love about this book is that it not only highlights the well-known biblical parents, but also parents who made bad choices and even many who are just overlooked.  There are certainly lessons we can learn from them, too, and Lindsey Bell does a great job in pointing that out!
