Raising Kids with Character: Review of Korie Robertson’s Strong & Kind

Would you believe me if I told you I’ve never seen an episode of Duck Dynasty?  Surprisingly enough, I don’t live under a rock somewhere, but I’ve just never watched the show.

With that said, I loved watching the whole Robertson family support Sadie Robertson as she competed on Dancing with the Stars a couple of seasons ago.  Throughout the season, I noticed what gift Sadie was to the entire DWTS cast and what a blessing her family was to her as she competed.

I’ve always known the Robertsons as a Christian family and saw many of their values and convictions on display during that season of DWTS.  My limited exposure to them was more than enough reason to get me excited when I learned that Korie Robertson, wife to Duck Commander CEO and Duck Dynasty star Willie Robertson, had a parenting book in the works.  There’s something different about this family and I’m happy to learn more about their thoughts on raising children!

Now that I’ve had a chance to read Korie Robertson’s Strong and Kind, I’m so excited to share a little about the book with you.  In Strong and Kind: And Other Important Character Traits Your Child Needs to Succeed, she shares tried and true wisdom, personal experiences, and tips for parents in all walks of life.  If you’re a Duck Dynasty fan, you’ll be additionally happy, happy, happy (did I get that right?) knowing that Willie’s thoughts on character are also shared throughout Strong and Kind.

A Look at Korie Robertson’s
Strong and Kind

I don’t want to give away too much about the book, but can I just say that I’m blown away by Strong and Kind?  I confess that I wasn’t necessarily expecting to love this book simply because I’m not a Duck Dynasty fan, but there’s incredible insight in these pages.  What I love the most about this book is the emphasis that parents must model character in order to see it in their children.  Indeed, none of this matters if the very ones teaching them to be kids of character don’t reflect those character traits in day-to-day life.

“What America needs today is parents who don’t just say they value these virtues, but who live them and passionately and boldly teach them to their children.”

Strong and Kind is divided into three sections that focus on why character is important, identifying character traits, and how to parent with those traits in mind.

While we’re well aware that it’s important to raise kids of character, Hubby and I have never sat down and talked about what character traits we specifically want to speak into our kids’ lives.  What a great idea … I’ve never thought about it in regards to character traits before, but there’s so much value in parenting with the end in mind!

The second part of the book highlights several character traits.  In addition to strength and kindness, Robertson focuses on humility, honesty, compassion, joy, self control, patience, and loyalty.  If you’ve never taken the time to think of what role you want these traits to play in the lives of your children, now is the time and Strong and Kind is the resource to help you do it!

Lastly, Robertson gives practical advice on how to parent with these character traits in mind.   As much as I’ve loved reading this entire book, this third section is perhaps my favorite.  Understanding the importance of character and identifying specific traits are both great, but having help instilling these traits in our children is invaluable.

Bottom Line: Whether your a Duck Dynasty fan or not, Strong and Kind is a must-read for parents!   These concepts aren’t new to me, but I’ve devoured this book and taken page after page of notes.   Seriously though, I’ve highlighted a third of it!  I didn’t expect this to be one of the best parenting books I’ve read, but I’ve gained so much from it.
